Bolt builds half of a long prompt

Cataloged October 16, 2026 · Bolt

Symptom

One message asked for several features. The preview has some of them, and the rest were dropped with no error.

Root cause

Bolt's troubleshooting guide says the usual cause of a partial build is one large, multi-part prompt. Large requests overwhelm the edit, especially in a bigger app. The documented process is one change, then a check, then the next change. Plan Mode is there to split a build into steps before code is written. The guide also says not to assume Bolt remembers earlier parts of the conversation.

Fix prompt

Stop and do not implement a new feature yet.

Read README.md if it exists. Then tell me, in a numbered list, which parts of my last request are already in the code and which are missing. Do not edit files.

After I pick one missing item, implement only that item. Name the files you will touch before you edit them. Stop when that item works.

Paste this into the coding tool that has your own project open.

2-minute self-check

These steps are for an app you own. Do not run them against someone else's project.

  1. Compare your own preview with the original request and write down what is missing.
  2. Send one of those items as its own prompt. Check that screen before you send the next.
  3. If a change touches files you did not name, revert it from Version History and resend a narrower prompt.
